Where an inlet grate protrudes beyond the channel lip, a cyclist travelling on the lip line has to negotiate a sudden fall and rebound in a short distance. A requirement then, for bicycle safety, is to limit the protrusion and the lip line depression. This may be achieved by a reduced width of grate and a reduced kerb opening.
